The Wybourn Village Centre is a £2.4 million urban regeneration project located in the inner-city neighbourhood of Wybourn, Sheffield. Developed by Great Places Housing Group in partnership with Manor & Castle Development Trust, the project was shaped through close consultation with the local community. At its heart lies the new Pat Midgley Community Hub, named in honour of the beloved councillor who dedicated years of service to the area before her passing in 2020.
A New Focal Point for the Neighbourhood
Positioned near the local Children’s Centre and Wybourn Community Primary School, the Village Centre has quickly become a vibrant hub for the surrounding 2,000 homes. In addition to 12 much-needed apartments, the project introduces flexible community spaces including a café and areas designed to host events, education courses, and other engagement activities. It’s a place built not just for living, but for gathering, learning, and connecting.
Design Rooted in Context
DK Architects led the design, creating two low-rise residential blocks that harmonise with the existing neighbourhood. The ground floor of each block is built using Ibstock’s Birtley Olde English bricks, paired with brown medium mortar to create a grounded, traditional base. Above, the design transitions into Ibstock’s Commercial Red bricks with a natural mortar - defining the change in function and subtly reflecting the banding patterns seen in nearby houses.
Both brick types feature a light texture, but the Commercial Red brick introduces a slightly brighter tone, adding visual interest while staying true to the local palette.
A Striking Glazed Brick Feature
Perhaps the most eye-catching element of the project is the glazed brick corner of Block A. Using Joris Glazed bricks, the elevation shifts from dark blue at ground level to a lighter blue above, acting as a visual landmark and symbolic representation of the community. Though distinct from the surrounding brickwork, the glazed section shares consistent detailing, helping it integrate seamlessly with the rest of the development.
Blending Modern Features with Traditional Craft
The Village Centre combines robust, high-quality materials with thoughtful architectural flourishes. Large areas of glazing, subtle brick detailing, and recessed windows introduce a contemporary feel while respecting the area’s character. Vertical brickwork crowns both blocks, and pre-cast mosaic elements on each corner enhance the design's visual rhythm.
These modern touches ensure the building feels fresh and relevant, without overwhelming its historic context.
A Lasting Impact on Community Life
This project marks the final phase of Great Places Housing Group’s wider investment in the area. Before construction began, local schools and services were oversubscribed, unable to meet demand. Now, the Wybourn Village Centre is not only a beautiful new addition to the streetscape but a vital resource for residents - providing spaces for education, social interaction, and support.
The combination of durable brickwork, community-driven design, and long-term social value ensures this development will serve Wybourn for generations to come.
