In the evolving landscape of Harrow town centre, Sheepcote Road demonstrates how crafted restraint can adapt a brownfield site into a high-density residential development. Designed by Threefold Architects for Pocket Living, this 149 home scheme offers a structured approach to affordable housing, where material selection is intrinsically linked to the urban form.
The Art of the Interlock
The scheme is defined by two interlocking L shaped buildings that reconfigure a previously impermeable site. By framing a new pedestrian route and a central landscaped courtyard, the architects have managed the transition between the high-rise town centre and the lower density residential grain of the surrounding neighbourhood.
The architectural language is one of rhythmic precision. The grid like façade aligns with the internal floor plans while modulating the building mass, creating a vertical emphasis that establishes a formal civic presence.
The Palette: Technical Precision
At the heart of Sheepcote Road identity is the deliberate use of clay brick. Drawing inspiration from the interwar shopping parades of Harrow history, the design team selected a palette that balances contemporary lines with traditional masonry tones.
- The primary volume is wrapped in Floren Pallas Grey bricks from Michelmersh Brick Holdings PLC. This light grey multi brick provides a neutral, consistent canvas.
- To provide depth, the architects integrated Shoreham Red Multi bricks from Ibstock PLC. These rose hued bricks are laid in contrasting bands, projecting courses, and headers to create texture and shadow.
The technical execution of this design was managed by Woodhurst Brickwork Ltd, whose work is evidenced in the red brick lintels framing the large windows and the transition between varied brick bonds.
A Tactile Presence
The use of the Ibstock Shoreham Red Multi defines the building interaction with the public realm. A colonnaded brick podium at the base of the buildings frames the main entrances, grounding the structure.
This material application continues internally. In the double height entrance lobby, the red brick is used for interior walls and integrated planters. This creates a robust, hard wearing environment for the co working mezzanines and social areas, ensuring the internal spaces share the durability of the exterior.
Functional Longevity
Beyond its aesthetic contribution, clay brick was selected for its inherent performance characteristics. In a scheme prioritising long term maintenance and affordability, the durability of the brick envelope is a key functional asset. When combined with high performance glazing and solar PVs, the thermal mass of the brickwork contributes to the building operational efficiency for the residents.
Sheepcote Road demonstrates that affordable housing can maintain high architectural standards. Through the application of varied brick tones and textures, Threefold Architects have delivered a scheme that provides a contemporary addition to Harrow while referencing the established craft of British brickwork.
