Secklow Gate stands as a striking new residential landmark in the centre of Milton Keynes, a development that seamlessly blends architectural ambition with technical excellence. Delivered by Galliford Try, the scheme comprises four blocks and 329 Private Rental Sector (PRS) apartments, designed to provide high-quality, modern living spaces while embracing Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) for improved build efficiency and sustainability.
To bring the project’s contemporary design to life, Phoenix Brickwork were appointed to deliver the full brickwork package, including an impressive 3,000 linear metres of masonry support, all executed to the highest quality standards.
Brick Selection: Michelmersh Wire-Faced Windermere Grey
For Secklow Gate, the design team selected Michelmersh’s Wire-Faced Windermere Grey bricks, in both dark and light tones, creating a refined yet durable façade. These clay bricks combine the aesthetic appeal of a modern finish with the structural performance of an engineering-grade material.
Being wire-cut gives the Windermere Grey several advantages:
- Improved consistency and finish - resulting in sharp lines and uniform texture.
- Enhanced strength - wire-cut bricks are typically denser and more durable.
- Stable water performance - cutting method doesn’t drastically alter absorption, maintaining excellent durability.
Built to Perform
The Windermere Grey achieves a compressive strength of ≥ 50 N/mm², providing engineering-grade performance suitable for load-bearing and high-stress applications. With water absorption ≤ 12% and a freeze/thaw rating of F2, it offers strong resistance to moisture ingress and frost damage. The brick is non-combustible (Class A1 reaction to fire) and fully compliant with BS EN 771-1, ensuring consistent quality, durability, and structural reliability.
Craftsmanship and Detailing
Phoenix Brickwork’s scope covered the complete external façade across all four blocks, ranging from three to eleven storeys. The project’s standout feature is its decorative brick detailing, including intricate ‘Honeycomb’ patterns and ‘Protruding Headers’ - both requiring exceptional precision and craftsmanship to execute flawlessly.
These unique design elements not only enhance the architectural character of the development but also highlight Phoenix Brickwork’s ability to deliver technically demanding masonry with confidence and care.
In addition to the brickwork, the team also installed all fire barriers throughout the project - further underlining their role in ensuring both safety and quality.
The Secklow Gate project perfectly demonstrates what happens when design ambition, modern construction techniques, and traditional craftsmanship come together.
