A total of five projects are shortlisted in the Individual Housing Development category of this year’s Brick Awards. The buildings in this category, sponsored by Northcot Brick, have all been designed for residential use and, between them present a rich variety of design styles, interpretation of contemporary architecture and brickwork technique.
First up in our shortlist is Haringey Brick House. Built on the plot of an ageing and decaying garage, the house was designed as an innovative way to build small and cost-effectively without compromising design quality. Situated within a typically Victorian streetscape, with a strong rhythm of horizontal lines, vertical window proportions and brick bonding, Haringey Brick House complements surrounding houses whilst introducing a contemporary context. The architects, Satish JASSAL Architects, used a series of brick bonding types – vertical staggered, horizontal staggered and stack bonding – before inserting oak panels between them. The West Hoathly bricks were manufactured by Ibstock Brick.
Nigel Daly Design present our next shortlisted project, Hulmefield Hall, which sits within the Cheshire countryside accompanied by spectacular views across the Cheshire plains. Drawing inspiration from the neo-classical era, the house replaced an existing farm and ancillary buildings. The choice of building materials was meticulously planned, concluding with the Galtres Blend brick, manufactured by York Handmade Brick Company. This design is enhanced by the un-tooled ‘old English’ lime mortar which stands alongside sharp lines of fletcher bank stone, heavy section woodwork and a reclaimed welsh slate roof covering.
One of the core principles behind the design of Kenwood Lee House is harmony and homogeneity with the rich architectural heritage of the Highgate Conservation Area. Maintaining a fastidious attention to detail, the house is conceived as a contemporary interpretation of a double fronted suburban villa. Designed by Cousins & Cousins, the brick detailing pays homage to the prevalent arts & crafts movement in the surrounding area. The façade is made up of Bemmel Blue stock clay brick, manufactured by Wienerberger and chosen for its light textured appearance, while the style of brickwork is in complementary contrast with the traditional brick vernacular found in the area.
Also shortlisted is Ten Oaks Farm, designed by Kirkland Fraser Moor. Encapsulating an eco-friendly design, the shape of the building enables solar gain throughout the day, which significantly reduces reliance on the national energy grid. Eco-friendly credentials aside, the curved design aspect of the build is an impressive and unexpected design that sits seamlessly within the farmland location of the property. The building is constructed from natural, low-embodied-carbon materials that weather well and require little maintenance. All the building materials were manufactured by H.G. Matthews, from the brick and lime mortar which make up the façade to the handmade, woodfired clay roof tiles that adorn the top of the main house. The woodfired bricks have been dried using biomass boilers, which significantly reduces the use of diesel.
Finally, we have Terracotta House, designed by Annabelle Tugby Architects. The building materials used respond to light and shadow in such a way that the house presents a rich and complex range of colours and texture. The rustic Birtley Olde English Buff brick, manufactured by Ibstock Brick, and handmade terracotta tiles imitate the leaves and scenery from the surrounding forest, reinforcing the buildings relationship with its natural setting. The rustic brick choice, as well as the detailing of the recessed brickwork, significantly contribute to the success of the project.

Celebrating its 43rd year and a record 350+ entries, the BDA Brick Awards has established itself as one of the industry’s most sought after and well attended events. Each year the awards attract the entry of exemplary clay brick projects from leading architects, housebuilders, developers and contractors across 15 hotly contested categories.
Winners will be announced at the ceremony which takes place at the Royal Lancaster London on Wednesday 13th November 2019.
