Hendrik Heyns, Partner at acclaimed architectural practice, Allies and Morrison, will present at the forthcoming Brick Works event on Tuesday 3rd October in Southwark, London. The evening event, hosted by Allies and Morrison, will provide in-depth, contemporary case studies on some of the most notable clay brick architecture in the UK’s built environment.
Hendrik trained at the University of the Free State, in South Africa, working in Johannesburg before joining Allies and Morrison in 1999. He became a Partner of the practice in 2015. Hendrik has been involved in a range of residential, retail and education schemes, and has extensive experience of delivering projects from inception through to completion. He was Project Architect on Paradise Street, Liverpool, a mixed-use scheme forming the centre piece of the BDP-designed masterplan. In recent years Hendrik has concentrated on the practice’s housing and regeneration work.
Hendrik’s focus at the Brick Works event will be two recent projects:
Aldgate Place is a cluster of tall and low rise buildings on a very constrained inner city site of 0.764 hectares. It is a joint venture high-density regeneration project between Barratt London and British Land. The scheme, designed by Allies and Morrison, delivers 463 residential units in three towers of 21, 24 and 25 storeys. Conceived as a new urban neighbourhood the site offers residential units, office space, a 4-star hotel and a generous new public realm.
West Hendon is the regeneration of a 1960’s housing estate into 2,000 new homes, new public parks, primary school, community centre and commercial space for small cafes or shops. The winner of Brick Award 2016 for Best Urban Regeneration Project, judges commented ‘This project is a fantastic example of how brick can add value to an urban regeneration.’
Hendrik led the award-winning St Andrews project in Bromley-by-Bow, producing the initial masterplan of 964 units on the site of a former hospital, as well as the detailed design and construction information for three phases of the development. Currently, Hendrik is working on a number of residential projects in London, including West Hendon, Aldgate Place and the Gascoigne Estate regeneration masterplan. Hendrik is a key member of the practice’s Housing Group and was involved in producing a Housing Design Guide for the practice.
