A strong Brick Awards entry does more than describe a project, it tells the story behind the design, craftsmanship, and performance of clay brick. 

The most successful submissions are clear, focused, and show how brick elevates the outcome. Use the tips below to help your project stand out.

1. Start with a Clear Project Story

Begin by explaining the intent of the project. What was the brief, and what challenges needed to be solved? Whether it’s responding to site constraints, heritage context, sustainability goals, or community needs, set the scene early so the judges understand the purpose behind your design decisions.

2. Explain Why Brick Was Essential

Judges want to know why brick was chosen, not just that it was used. Clearly outline how clay brick contributed to the project’s success. Consider aspects such as durability, thermal performance, sustainability, low maintenance, fire resistance, or its ability to age beautifully over time.

3. Highlight Design Excellence

Describe how clay brick enhances the architectural expression of the building. This may include colour selection, texture, bonding patterns, detailing, or the way brick interacts with light and shadow. If innovation is involved, whether in form, application, or construction technique, explain it clearly and concisely.

4. Showcase Craftsmanship

Each entry is limited to six images, so select photographs that best support your written submission. Prioritise clear, high-quality images that showcase brick detailing, craftsmanship, and the completed project in context. Images taken on a bright, well-lit day help reveal colour, texture, and depth, while avoiding heavy shadows or overcast conditions. Where possible, include a mix of overall views and close-up details that highlight what makes the brickwork exceptional.

8. Review Against the Category Criteria

Before submitting, re-read the award category criteria and ensure your entry directly addresses each requirement. Tailoring your response shows attention to detail and respect for the judging process.
