About the project

Market Pavilion in Blyth, Northumberland, is a transformative regeneration project that demonstrates how carefully considered brick architecture can revitalise town centres and reconnect communities with their civic identity. Designed by FaulknerBrowns and delivered by Northumberland County Council as part of the £90m Energising Blyth regeneration programme, the Pavilion has re-established the historic marketplace as a vibrant destination for culture, learning, creativity and social interaction.

A defining feature of the project is the extensive use of Ibstock Beamish Blend brick, manufactured at Ibstock’s Birtley factory in the North East. The regional provenance of the brick was fundamental to the project’s regeneration ambitions, helping ensure the Pavilion felt rooted within Blyth’s architectural and industrial heritage while supporting local supply chains and reducing transport impacts.

The Beamish Blend waterstruck brick was specifically selected for its rich texture and tonal variation, qualities that give the building a crafted and enduring civic presence. The waterstruck manufacturing process creates subtle irregularities across the surface of the brickwork, generating depth, shadow and movement across the façades. This tactile quality helps soften the scale of the building and creates a welcoming public environment that feels both contemporary and deeply connected to place.

Before redevelopment, the site consisted largely of hard paving and limited market activity. Through the careful integration of Ibstock Beamish Blend brick across both the Pavilion and the surrounding public realm, the project has transformed the area into a high-quality civic setting with landscaped gathering spaces, seating areas and improved biodiversity. Brick-lined edges and elevations help frame and define the marketplace, encouraging increased use and social interaction throughout the day and evening.

Since opening in August 2025, the Pavilion has hosted more than 90 cultural and placemaking events, attracting over 100,000 visitors and generating significant economic and social benefits for the town centre. Activities range from music workshops and theatre rehearsals to wellbeing sessions and dementia-friendly screenings, helping create a genuinely inclusive cultural destination.

The building also supports Blyth’s wider sustainability ambitions through all-electric operation, rooftop photovoltaics, air source heat pumps and high-performance insulation. The durability and longevity of the Ibstock Beamish Blend brick further reinforce the project’s long-term regeneration value through reduced maintenance requirements and enduring architectural quality.

Through the expressive and regionally rooted use of Ibstock Beamish Blend waterstruck brick, Market Pavilion has successfully transformed an underused urban site into a thriving civic and cultural landmark that is helping redefine the future of Blyth town centre.
