About the project

Greenholme Street is a contemporary residential development that demonstrates how medium-density housing can enrich an established urban neighbourhood through thoughtful design, strong placemaking and a carefully considered material palette.

Located on Glasgow's south side, the development delivers 55 apartments across three residential buildings ranging from four to five storeys. Rather than approaching the site as a straightforward exercise in housing delivery, the design sought to create a genuine sense of community while responding positively to the character of its surroundings.

The arrangement of the buildings is central to the success of the scheme. Positioned to frame a series of sheltered communal gardens, the development creates valuable shared spaces that are both physically and visually protected from the surrounding roads. These landscaped areas encourage informal interaction between residents, provide opportunities for outdoor activity and establish a calm, welcoming environment within a busy urban setting. New routes through the site promote ease of movement, while generous cycle provision and integrated parking support a range of travel choices and contemporary lifestyles.

Architecturally, Greenholme Street draws inspiration from Glasgow's traditional tenement streetscape without resorting to imitation. The development adopts the robust proportions and strong sense of enclosure characteristic of the city's residential heritage, reinterpreting them through a contemporary language that feels appropriate to its setting.

Brick plays a defining role in achieving this balance between context and modernity. Selected early in the design process as the principal façade material, it provides permanence, texture and a strong visual connection to Glasgow's historic architecture. Forterra's Granite Ash brick was used at ground-floor level to establish a durable and grounded base, while Bamford Blend was introduced to the upper storeys, bringing warmth and tonal variation to the elevations. Together, the contrasting materials articulate the building form and add depth and character across the development.

Beyond the quality of the architecture, Greenholme Street succeeds through its commitment to placemaking. The combination of thoughtfully designed homes, attractive communal landscapes and carefully selected materials has created a development that feels rooted in its context while meeting the expectations of modern urban living.

The result is a distinctive addition to Glasgow's residential fabric; one that demonstrates how medium-scale housing can deliver density without compromise, fostering community, enhancing its surroundings and creating a place that residents are proud to call home.
