RHP’s careful rejuvenation, restoration and reimagining of Basil Spence’s brick masterpiece has lifted the Grade II brick icon into the 21st century.

As one of the most iconic examples of brick Brutalist architecture, repair and renovation of the brickwork involvedcareful consideration of the mortar, re-pointing, and cleaning, which was all agreed in consultation with theconservation officer. A combination of traditional materials and modern cleaning techniques produced an excellentresult.

The existing building was built with traditional lime mortar and after investigation of materials we concluded on themost appropriate and sustainable mix, comprising 2.5 parts Moorhouse Quarry grade B ‘O’ sand with 1 part St AstierNatural Hydraulic Lime.

With sensitive brickwork and existing lime mortar to the external and internal walls were cleaned with a lowpressure high temperature Doff system to prevent any damage or unnecessary damage to the building.

A challenge to lift the previously derelict site into 21st century comfort was installation of double glazing; the thickerglass was carefully accommodated with minimal impact on the fabric of the structure.

Preservation of the brick also required a remedy to Spence’s original design, which left the brick parapets exposed toexcessive moisture, weathering and corrosion. The addition of protection was carefully navigated to preserve boththe Brutalist design and the actual structure for future generations. Exposed parapets are a hallmark of Spence’sdesign, and rhp rose to the challenge to preserve shape of the iconic local landmark.

Freshening up the brickwork was the first step in an extensive overhaul. Spence celebrated red brick by leavingswaths exposed in the interior design, famously in the front lobby. This was respected in the revamp by glass escalator doors to modernise accessibility and rejuvenating the stunning circular window to exhibit the natural clay in its best light, literally.
