About the project

Set in the heart of Birmingham’s thriving Jewellery Quarter, the Setl project saw the redevelopment of Cornwall House, a former office block built in the 1970s, into 101 high-quality one and two-bedroom apartments, with commercial space on the ground floor.

Recruited to design and develop Setl, BNP Architects, well-known for their work within the historic surroundings of the Jewellery Quarter, ensured that this innovative residential development was aligned with the industrial characteristic of the area.

Amongst the desirable St Paul’s area of the Jewellery Quarter, Setl aimed to deliver the highest quality residential building, just a stone’s throw away from the bustling city centre of Birmingham, perfectly encompassing history while looking to the future.

Using Ibstock’s Arden Weathered Red and Cissbury Red Multi Stock allowed for the perfect nod to Birmingham’s distinctive terracotta architecture. The combination of the warm red and rich brown hues of the bricks was the perfect arrangement for ensuring the site befits the traditional traits and materials visible throughout the Jewellery Quarter.

The main block of this project was designed in a hinge profile and is made up of the deep red brickwork. These elements are key allusions to the city as the birthplace of the industrial revolution, as well as keeping the past alive as the Hinge Works occupied the neighbouring site many years ago.
