When it Comes to Price Brickwork is Hard to Beat

Brick has long been a favourite building material. It’s not only beautiful to look at, it has excellent sustainability credentials and it’s hard to beat on price. This combination is especially valuable right now, given the pressure to meet CSH targets and the soaring costs and longer lead times from many rival cladding materials.

An investigation by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) found that, against a line-up of popular finishes for the external skin, installed brickwork beats just about all of them on price.

Brick is Not Just a Pretty Face

Brick has been a reliable construction material for centuries and there is no shortage of brickwork structures around the world still providing good service, despite lengthy periods of neglect. This is probably why for many of us, seeing brickwork in buildings is not only pleasant but also reassuring. But what is it that makes brickwork perform so well? It cannot be because brick is beautiful! A closer look at the generally unacknowledged role of brickwork in structures may provide the answer.

BDA Supports Construction Industry Charity

The Brick Development Association (BDA) continues to support CRASH, the construction industry’s charity for homeless people. Through its annual Brick Awards, the BDA has raised over £10,000 for the charity and in 2009 alone, nearly £4000 went to help the Eastbourne Day Centre, a CRASH supported project.

Brick Awards Search is On

The search is now underway to find the best brickwork in action. The Brick Development Association has opened the door for this year’s Brick Awards.

The Awards, which first took place in 1977, are one of the top design and construction awards in the country – and the definitive showcase for what clay brick can do.

Allies to Chair Brick Awards Judging Panel

Bob Allies, partner in leading architectural practice Allies and Morrison will continue as Chairperson of the Judging panel for this year’s Brick Awards.

“The purpose of the awards is of course to recognise the very best, and because of the incredible diversity of the ways in which brick is being used today, the awards don’t just recognise the talents of architects and designers, they acknowledge the expertise of the contractors, the consistency of the house-builders, the quality of the manufacturers, the skills of the craftsmen, and indeed the inventiveness and imagination of all those who use the material,” comments Allies.
