We provide free technical and architectural lectures on brickwork to Universities and Schools of Engineering and Architecture throughout the United Kingdom. We also provide CPD seminars to practising architects.

Synopsis of Architectural and Technical Lectures

These notes briefly describe the range and content of the fully illustrated lectures which we can present. It should be noted however, that these lectures are not standard pre-scripted sessions, but are compiled and presented individually with the specific interests of the particular group of students or delegates in mind. Brickwork in Modern Architecture

A brief overview of the brick industry illustrating the wide range of bricks available in terms of colour, texture, shape and method of manufacture. The main factors affecting the appearance of brickwork using the work of leading architects to illustrate the architectural potential, versatility and durability of brick.

An Introduction to Structural Brickwork for Architects

The principles of structural brickwork. Modern design techniques to exploit its benefits and overcome its limitations. Examples of diaphragm and fin walls, reinforced and post tensioned brickwork.

Brickwork as a Cladding to Framed Structures

Support and restraint systems for brickwork cladding to steel and concrete frames. Accommodating differential movement between frames and brickwork. Brick cladding to timber framed structures. Comparison of 'on the frame' and 'off the frame cladding'.

Brick in Landscape

Covering the wide variety of bricks available for landscape work and the basic properties of the bricks and mortar to achieve adequate durability. Imaginative examples of flexible and rigid paving, brick sculpture and carving are discussed along with technical / aesthetic considerations when designing free-standing and retaining walls.

Brickwork Durability

A review of the potentially destructive agents acting on brickwork (water, frost and soluble salts), and the design, specification and quality control measures necessary to ensure long term durability and appearance.

Bricks and their Physical Properties

The Variety of U.K. clay and calcium silicate bricks and their classification under British Standard Specifications. Their strength, frost resistance, soluble salt content, water absorption characteristics, limits of size, and special shapes.

Brickwork Mortars and their Effect on Appearance

A review of modern mortars and their physical properties. The basis for mortar specification in relation to durability and strength of masonry. Quality control measures on site.

Brick Manufacture

An outline of the various methods of manufacture used in the UK for the production of clay and calcium silicate bricks. Covers the wide range of raw materials available and how these, combined with the different manufacturing methods, generate the extensive range of bricks currently in production.

Achieving Good Appearance of Facing Brickwork

A review of the design and specification factors that affect the appearance of brickwork. The control of brick bonding, dimensional variation, colour banding, and staining are covered together with details of appropriate quality control measures to be taken on site.

Resistance of Masonry to Driving Rain

Assessment of exposure; effects of building design detail; factors affecting water penetration of masonry. The principles of cavity wall construction, damp proof courses and cavity trays.

Movement in Modern Brick Structures

Explanation of why contemporary brickwork is vulnerable to stresses generated by thermal and moisture movement. Current recommendations for movement provision. Critical considerations when brick is used as a cladding to framed structures.
