Projects shortlisted in this category are all single dwellings and contemporary in style. They demonstrate a commitment to the use of clay brick and are inspiring examples of that which can be achieved with the material on small sites.

Aperture House

 

Aperture House fits discreetly within this East Canonbury Conservation Area. The site was previously occupied by a domestic garage, enclosed by brick walls from various eras, most of which has been retained.

Mews House

 

A compact 2 bedroom mews house and enclosed courtyard in Highgate. This 2 storey brick house faces onto a quiet cobbled mews. The site was formerly occupied by a disused garage and derelict garden.

Modern Detached

 

A contemporary, respectful addition to a suburban street. The project responds to the Arts and Crafts tradition whilst exploring light, depth and geometry of threshold.

Pennycroft

 

An impressive five-bedroom family home that replaces an outdated 1930s house on a semi-rural plot on the edge of Great Missenden in Buckinghamshire. In a designated ‘Area of Special Character’, the design is a contemporary interpretation of the local Arts and Crafts architecture.

Stepping Stone House

 

On this heavily constrained site, three disconnected, unused and flood prone outbuildings have been redeveloped to form additional living accommodation for the existing house, with sensitivity to the particular needs of the resident children.
