2009 Best Public Housing Development

Church Street, London

Church Street, London

Architect: Allford Hall Monaghan Morris
Brickwork contractor: Ferguson Contractors
Brick: Freshfield Lane Selected Dark Facings

This project overcomes a difficult sloping site by creating a shared private courtyard between two blocks, one at the front of the site, the other at the rear.  The judges appreciated that the buildings were constructed from a limited palette of simple, robust materials controlled by the application of a rigorous system of proportions.  The relationship between solid and void is well handled as is the "open" corner detail to the blocks.  The judges felt this building was an excellent example of its type.

The slide caption announcing Church Street as the winner at the Awards 2009 contained an error in the brick designation.  The BDA apologises for this error and the distress caused to Freshfield Lane Brickworks Ltd, by describing the bricks as Ibstock Freshfield Lane Selected Dark Facings.  The bricks used in this project were Freshfield Lane Selected Dark Facings.
