2009 Best Outdoor Space
The Chadwick Centre, Berkhampstead School, Berkhampstead
Architect: Short and Associates
Brickwork contractor: Mansell
Brick: H G Matthews Top Fired Multi
The Chadwick Centre occupies what was once a forgotten corner of the School's site. Now the building provides catering and arts facilities for the School. The landscape is crucial to this function because it provides the link between the new building and the rest of the campus, not only by lawns and vegetation, but also bypaths (which cross a stream on a small bridge). The paths lead to an external covered gathering space outside the dining hall which is the intermediate space between inside and outside. The judges thought that this scheme explored all aspects of 'landscape' and were pleased to award it the prize.
